Travel experience, bali

We visited bali in jan 2014. So we stayed at ubud and Seminyak - two main areas in bali, around 1.5 hour away by road

Locals at seminyak are not so warm friendly as at ubud. There is a stark difference in the attitude of the locals towards tourists. You will seldom see waiters smiling while providing service to you at seminyak. Though in ubud thy smile so much that sometimes you are overwhelmed by the level of politeness there.

If you want to experience nature, rice paddy fields, peace, then ofcourse ubud is the place to go. If you feel more adventurous then you may go further north to ubud, though I am bit unsure of the availability of vegetarian food there as they may be unpopular with the tourists.

Veg food at ubud is just not a problem. If anything, there are too many veg options to choose from.

If you want beaches and night life, then ofcourse seminyak is the place to be. Although I didn't see many clubs and discs. Night life in seminyak probably means sitting in cafés, live music and food.

Beaches - the beaches are good for surfing and water activities but not for swimming and lounging on the beach. Seminyak beach is on black sand is very dirty. Beach at nasi dua is on white sand but still it for lounging as the sand is not smooth and the sea gets deep very near to the shore.

Bargaining is a pain or an opportunity in bali depending n your temperament. Taxi drivers particularly quote anything and then it's up to you to bargain.

Hotels architecture wise are better in seminyak than other places but they lack personal touch in seminyak in comparison to ubud.

Nusa dua - beach side

In Nusa dua... On the beach side, mostly sea food is available. Although they can do a vegetarian version of Indonesian food I.e rice and noodles with vegetables

Wayang Ocha, seminyak, bali

There are reasonable number of vegetarian options here. You can get veg burger, wrap, sandwiches, omlets and I think pizza also. The burger was huge and very well prepared. The wrap was ok.

Anamoli coffee, seminyak, bali

Coffee is very good. A little overpriced. Very few veg options.

Trattoria, seminyak

We read in its reviews that it serves very good food like it has just come from Italy. But in our opinion the food and more than that the service and staff sucks.

Cafe wayang, monkey forest street, ubud

Highly recommended for Italian food and a romantic dinner setting. Candle lit Tables are set between greenery and you enjoy complete privacy with sounds of water falling in the background. Don't go in night since you would not be able to enjoy the greenery in dark. We went in evening and I guess that's a perfect time to be there. No mosquitoes issue.

Cafe lotus, monkey forest street, ubud

We went there by accident and it was lovely. Candle lit dining overlooks lotus pond and a mildly lit temple. In the night it looks very beautiful. A perfect setting for a nice romantic candle lit dinner. They give Indonesian food. Vegetarian Indonesian food is also easily available there. Service is excellent and staff is very courteous as other parts of ubud.

Breadlife, monkey forest street, ubud

Go to breadlife on monkey street, ubud centre, if you love chocolate or cheese and are not on a diet. We had a cheese deluxe and a cappuccino and after several hours of wandering around in the late evening dusk, it was bliss!

Cafe Riyoshi, Japanese food, Hanuman Street, Ubud, Bali

Had dinner at this Japanese restaurant. We went there a little spectical but there was a reasonable variety of veg food available. It's hard to recall the names but we had a nice veg tofu soup. It was bland and we had to add soy sauce to get any flavour. In general, food was rather bland for the Indian palette. We ordered a veg noodle set that came with veg tempura. Also bland but with soy sauce it worked out nicely.

Lunch at Cafe Gayatri, Monkey Forest Street, Ubud, Bali

Had lunch at Cafe Gayatri. It is surprising why people say its hard to get vegetarian food here. We have just ordered a Nasi Campur (Rice) and veg kebabs. We have also ordered a Mie kuah (noodles) soup which is a veg noodle soup. Nasi Campur (without egg) is like rice with assortment of vegetables and sauces. We noticed that lassie is available at lot of places. A welcome fact for vegetarians.
